The Texas Legislature has added NASCAR, X Games and Ultimate Fighting Championship to the list of events eligible for millions in tax dollars through the Major Events Trust Fund.

The state Senate agreed on Tuesday with minor changes in a bill approved by the House a day earlier. Legislators believed they were making these events trust fund eligible two years ago but accidentally left out critical language. The law has to specify both the event and the event’s governing body.

The Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, added governing bodies that weren’t included in the 2013 revision. The trust fund allows the state and local governments to set aside some hotel, alcohol, sales and car rental tax money to help offset the cost of large events, such as the Super Bowl and the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards in Arlington.

Other bills have been filed that – if approved – would move funding oversight to the governor’s office, require audits and allow two rodeo championships to receive funding.
