The NCAA Final Four at AT&T Stadium is less than a month away. We can expect 10,000s of out-of-towners… and millions in revenue. Still, do events like this benefit our area in the long-term?
Monday, crews were out installing massive AT&T logos on the newly-named AT&T Stadium’s roof. It’s about to enter the national spotlight once again.
In 2011, Sporting News named the metroplex the country’s “Best Sports City.”
So, does that reputation really help out area long-term? Well, maybe…
“When you bring a big event into the metroplex, wether it’s the Super Bowl or the Final Four, it does give the region some cache. Yes, there are long-term economic benefits, but they’re virtually impossible to quantify,” explained Bernard Weinstein, an economist at SMU’s Cox School of Business.
Not to worry, sports fans. It may be virtually impossible to quantify the long-term benefits of mega sporting events, it’s also virtually impossible to imagine city leaders in North Texas not fighting to host them.
