I watched the Opening Ceremonies on Friday and likened it to a bad Super Bowl halftime show (perhaps even as bad as an Orange Bowl halftime show from the 80's). I got excited by the prospect of being able to watch pretty much anything that was taking place at any given moment. I quickly grew bored, however, watching table tennis and soccer. Sometimes the connection was great. Sometimes it was lousy. Sometimes there were ads. Sometimes the image locked up. Meh. The one thing for certain is that NBC is really going to have to re-invent itself by the time the 2016 Olympics rolls around. Being able to watch anything and everything live over the Internet is going to be a game-changer. When the whole world already knows that Michael Phelps didn't win a medal, and probably most of them watched the event as it happened, it's going to be very hard to build up drama on your tape-delayed primetime broadcast of the race. Being able to watch anything should be a boon to all of the "lesser" sports. I wouldn't mind spending time watching things like shooting, cycling, and boxing. It's also a breath of fresh air to just watch the sport without the inane commentators and/or the human-interest BS. Like I said, it will be interesting to see how we get to experience the Olympics in Rio 4 years from now.
